New Recruit: James

So, what’s your role at Sherwen?

James: My role at Sherwen Studios is the Senior Digital Designer.

Why did you apply for the role at Sherwen?

James: I have always been interested in working in diverse and different places within the creative industry, always hoping to continue to broaden my horizons and after working for large companies, I was interested in working with a digital studio again.

Also, applying for Sherwen Studios for me was a great step forward as a creative, not only being a lead creative for the studio but also the opportunity to work in an agency model that prides itself on digital first brand content

Can you briefly tell us about your previous experience?

James: So I’ve worked as a creative for 14+ years now and I’ve developed my experience as a Graphic Designer through a number of design forward e-commerce, Technology and commercial businesses as well as design studios.

I've also worked with some big names like Nintendo and EA Technology, producing print & digital content, then aiding with the implementation and development of the EA brand through both internal and external campaigns.

What are your best creative attributes and how they can benefit what Sherwen plans to achieve?

James: Working with e-Commerce business and brands, I felt that I could personally bring to Sherwen a continued focus on brand development from a digital perspective.

Working with well known brands and helping them to transition or sustain their digital platforms like creating a new website or producing campaign content and art direction published through their digital media.

What are you most excited about working on?

James: I would say firstly working on developing the great work Emma has put into the Sherwen Studios brand so far. Then I'm excited to start working with the exciting brands Sherwen partners with such as ScS and Booker Retail.

What’s the best thing about working at Sherwen?

James: So far the culture. Even though I‘ve only worked with the studio over Zoom so far, I can safely say that the people are what make it.

From a work point of view, I’m very happy with the freedom given to get the job done in the best possible way – it’s a great relief to get that vote of confidence from Matt and the team whilst knowing that you have their help and support as not only the new person but with the difficult time for us all with COVID-19 and the lockdown.

How would your friends describe you in three words?

James: Passionate, Creative and Caring.

Any hidden talents?

James: I try not to hide my talents as they might come in handy later - although I’m a dab hand at organisation if you can call that a talent!

What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

James: If 2020 has taught me anything, it would be family. End of 2019 into 2020 was a very hard year for me and my wife Katy, our twin babies (Jack and Jessica) were born prematurely and in February were released into the world as healthy, happy babies after a long 81 day stay in the neonatal unit in hospital, straight into a national lockdown a month later!

Despite this start they are absolutely thriving and all of this makes you really appreciate the value of what you have. A soppy answer but a true one!

If you weren’t a Design whizz, what do you think you’d be doing?

James: I think I would be severely unemployed! – Or most likely being creative in some other way, I’m thinking chalk drawings on the streets or that guy at events who does caricatures of people.

Or I would have followed the path of being a full-time illustrator, it something I dabble with from time to time when the opportunities comes up in my creative projects.
